Maybe this latest price-climb will get some of these fat-asses off of the road.

Some days I get the irresistible urge to put Hummer H2-style blister lights on the roof of my Toyota Corolla... just because.

Subject:SUVs not safer for children
Time:11:50 am
They are prone to roll-over (d'uh), so they are no better for child safety than regular cars. Oh, but they cost so much more, and use up so much more fuel... so, same level of safety but more people get to make money off of the stupid owners !

Who's the winner here? Not children, not the owners...

When I was in Philadelphia for the holiday, I went to this infoshop called "The Wooden Shoe" and it was incredible. But anyway, I got that documentary, "Still We Ride". I thought it was awesome.

Yesterday morning on the way to class I took a turn too tightly and lost my hubcap on the curb.

I pulled over to go get it and found it in the middle of the street, cars swerving around it.

I waited until traffic died down and before I got a chance to venture into the road, a big black Mercury Mariner comes barreling around the corner and ran over my hubcap. They didn't even slow down or stop.

Now the metal's all bent out of shape and it's missing pieces so I can't snap it back on the wheel, I have to get a completely new one.

The crummy thing is that the jerk probably didn't even feel himself run over it.

All this took place in the rain, by the way. With me standing there pathetically. It was one of "those" mornings.

Those drivers really do feel like they own the road...grr.

This is not necessarily about SUVs, but it is a little about the car and American culture.

I found this article at an MSN.com website (believe it or not). I never really considered MSN.com to be really interested in stories about people replacing bike riding to drive as their main mode of transportation, but I'll go for it. The author is from Outside Magazine, but I do think this article is pretty biased.

I also think that the title of this webpage is odd: "Dispatches - Notes from different corners of the world"

This article is about the US of A. Only one other country is mentioned...briefly in two sentences.

What does everyone else think?

I know this is not necessarily about SUVs but I thought this was interesting...

According to NICB (National Insurance Crime Buerau) for 2004, the top ten most stolen vehicles in the United States by make, model, and model year were:

1. 1995 Honda Civic
2. 1989 Toyota Camry
3. 1991 Honda Accord
4. 1994 Dodge Caravan
5. 1994 Chevrolet Full Size C/K 1500 Pickup
6. 1997 Ford F150 Series
7. 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup
8. 1990 Acura Integra
9. 1988 Toyota Pickup
10. 1991 Nissan Sentra

Here is 2005 as well: http://www.nicb.org/public/newsroom/hotwheels/index.cfm

Does anyone know specifics about these cars? I used to have a 1991 Honda Accord Wagon, so I know WHY that is the third most stolen car on this list!

This is a concept pic of the upcoming Lamborghini SUV. Yes sir, just like the porsche Cayenne, sports car blasphemy is about to be committed again. The choice of engines will be regular or turbo V-8s and v-10s. And I'm fairly sure it will be over-weight and get about 4 miles to the barrel.

I am a new member and I have a burning question for anyone and everyone to answer if they so please:

Do you think that Subaru should come out with a hybrid???

Where I am in Arizona, there are TONS of Subaru Outback wagons and for an all wheel drive wagon, they get pretty good gas mileage and they are not too big of cars. They are not considered an "SUV". The Subaru Forester is considered an "SUV" but it actually gets better one gallon more better gas mileage in a city than the Outback Wagon. I think Subaru would make tons of $$$ if they decide to invest in the hybrid market - Subarus in general are pretty reliable cars. I could also say I consider them as reliable as Hondas and Toyotas.

I am impressed with the hybrid cars out there today, but I don't have one yet. I have an old 1991 Honda wagon currently. I mostly use it to get out of town, but if I am town, it is so much easier to ride my bike everywhere.

What do other people think?

Thanks! :)

By the way: my least SUV is the HUGE Cadillacs that they have out there! They are monsters and I feel so small even in my wagon when I pass those things! I wish they would go away - they have the imitating SUV factor but they also have the silly reputation of being a "luxury" car. Sheesh.

WASHINGTON - Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday recalled 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for a cruise control switch suspected of causing engine fires. It is the fifth largest auto industry recall in U.S. history.

Ford said the recall of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles includes the company's hot-selling F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos. The company said it would start sending out recall notices to vehicle owners immediately.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the No. 2 U.S.-based automaker have been investigating complaints of engine fires linked to the switch.

Toyota Motor Co., meanwhile, recalled 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks amid concerns over the power steering system. The affected vehicles include 4Runner SUVs, compact pickups and T-100 pickups built between 1989 and 1998.

Toyota said a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels may fracture under conditions where the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped. Owners will be notified beginning in mid-September, the company said.

NHTSA has received more than 550 complaints of engine fires from the cruise control switch. There have been allegations of three deaths in cases cited in news reports or lawsuits in Iowa, Georgia and Arkansas.

The affected vehicles include: 1994-2002 model F-150s, 1997-2002 Expeditions, 1998-2002 Navigators and 1994-1996 Broncos equipped with factory-installed speed control.

"We have a solution that fixes the problem and we're confident that this is going to be the right remedy," said Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley.

Ford said its inquiry found that brake fluid could leak through the cruise control's deactivation switch into the system's electrical components, leading to potential corrosion. The corrosion could lead to a buildup of electrical current which could cause overheating and a fire.

Dealers will install a fused wiring harness to act as a circuit breaker in the system. The company said the harness would cut off electrical current to the switch if the current increases.

The concerns over the engine fires led to a recall in January of nearly 800,000 vehicles from the 2000 model year.

The Ford F-series truck has been the best-selling full-size pickup for nearly three decades. In July, when the company offered its employee discount to all buyers, Ford's F-series set a record for the highest monthly sales of any vehicle since the 1920s with total sales of 126,905 trucks, or an average 4,880 each day for the 26 sales days that month.
